5 ways to Develop a Growth Mindset
1. Acknowledge and embrace imperfections
It doesn’t matter where you start it matters where you are going. And where you are going is going to be far far away from what imperfections you currently have limiting your life. Remember the “devil you know is better than the devil you don’t”.
2. See challenges for the opportunities they are
Every single aspect of your life that you love right now is the byproduct of the challenges that sharpened those skills. Take a deep breath and approach every challenge in front of you right now as the opportunity to strengthen what needs strengthening.
3. Replace the word “failing” with “learning”
Think about the last time you said “I’m failing at….” or “I’m failing this….”. Recall that in your mind and relive that moment but this time say to your self the words “I’m learning…”. Notice how different that feels and how much of an impact it has on your understanding of the situation and your ability to affect the outcome.
4. Reward actions, not ends
This may be the most challenging aspect to develop because it requires a keen eye to the ways you have subtly been rewarding yourself and those around you. The biggest thing to notice is that rewarding the action has nothing to do with the outcome and everything to do with the steps in-between. That means that if the outcome was a “failure” the actions could still have been correct and need rewarding. As we replicate the correction actions we continue to move closer to the “right” outcome.
5. Use the word “yet”
This is a simple action that requires diligence and awareness. When you notice selling yourself short (ie: “I’m not good at cooking”, “I don’t understand stand math”, etc), simply add the word “yet” to that sentence and see how it changes your resolve (ie: “I’m not good at cooking yet”, “I don’t understand math yet”).
